Sonnet 116 Explained

Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare is a beautiful example of a wedding poem that describes love in the ways that it is and that it is not. By defining love as “the marriage of true minds”, Shakespeare attests to in his Sonnet 116 poem that love does not change and does not fade. Even when a partner becomes old, sick, or is near passing, true love remains.

Shakespeare also claims that love is akin to a star helping guide lost ships and that does not dim or fade even through the harshest of storms. If the claims in the sonnet were proven false, then Shakespeare declares that no man has ever truly loved and that he himself must never have written a word.

Overall, Sonnet 116 is, by far, one of the most beautiful pieces of literature about love written – crafted by a true literary master and explained in words that ring with truth even hundreds of years after they were first penned. For those looking for a beautiful wedding poem for their vows, then Sonnet 116 is an absolutely wonderful piece that describes the true depth of love between a couple and sounds phenomenal when read aloud.
